The "Orphan Works" bill is a danger to all artists! The bill is referred
to loosely as the "Orphan Works" bill. The essence of it is that if it
passes, it will become very difficult for all artists to protect their
artwork from infringement or theft.
Artists would be required to pay money to private registry
organizations to register every single piece of art they create in
order to receive ANY legal protection for their art. Because if you
don't register your work, according to the new bill, it's not
valuable and therefore you are "orphaning" or releasing your legal
rights to your art
This would include any drawing, sketch, painting, photograph,
sculpture, video recording, etc. that you ever create, or have
created since 1974.

At the end of the first article you will find links to the people who
are fighting this: the Illustrators Partnership. They have been
organizing artist groups around the world to oppose the bill.

This issue will need the support of artists willing to write and fax
and email their congressmen in the next few months. Particularly for
us artists in California, because apparently California congressmen
play a key role on the various boards that would oversee the bill.
May 16th to the 18th, Steven Assael will be teaching a portrait painting workshop! The workshop starts at 10am and goes on until 5pm. The cost for the workshop is $495. If you are interested in taking the workshop or if you have any questions call us at 818.708.9232!
Hope to see your pretty little face there!
